Greetings NCOBPS Family:

I am honored to serve as President-Elect of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS).  It is also an honor to serve under the leadership of Dr. Shayla Nunnally, the 39th President (2017-2019) of NCOBPS.  In addition to her brilliant scholarship and service advocacy, President Nunnally has a vision for growing the national presence of NCOBPS as we approach our 50-year anniversary.

President Nunnally’s inaugural address, "On the Road to Gold: 50 Years of Researching and Teaching Truth to Power,” outlines several programmatic areas that will sustain our organization’s professional stature in research, mentorship, activism, and teaching.  Her programmatic goals also seek to highlight the historical importance of NCOBPS, and its critical voice in national and international politics.

Since our formation in 1969, NCOBPS has been the conscious of the political science discipline.  Our organization has critically challenged institutional racism (and other systemic inequities) inside and outside the academy; bridged the divide between mainstream institutions and historically black colleges and universities;  partnered with professional organizations such as the American Political Science Association; championed diverse research methodologies as exemplified by the Hanes Walton, Jr. Award for Quantitative Methods Training and Alex Willingham Best Political Theory Paper Award; hosted the nation’s leading elected officials, civil rights leaders and activists at our annual conferences; and provided pathways for graduate students and junior faculty to successfully navigate the difficult terrains of the academy.

As we approach our 50th anniversary, we must deepen our commitment to NCOBPS and affirm the programmatic objectives of President Nunnally’s "On the Road to Gold” agenda.  Conference presentations, publishing opportunities in our journal National Political Science Review, service on the Executive Council and committees, and assisting our esteemed Executive Director are the many ways that we can uphold the values and tradition of NCOBPS. Please join us in celebrating the ancestors who birthed NCOBPS and promote the research, teaching, and activism of our current members.  Together, as an NCOBPS family, as we travel "On the Road to Gold,” we can advance a prophetic race scholarship that addresses the multifaceted black predicament.
